Although it’s getting warmer outside, it was chilly when I walked into Popbar on North Davidson Street for the first time earlier this year. Not only that, but I was met at the door with a line of people waiting. Young people, older people all there with the common goal of nabbing a unique pop on a stick. I’d heard so much about Popbar, so I was eager to see exactly what it was all about. Finally, after the crowd cleared, I was able to meet Kia and Clarence Lyons. They are a husband and wife team and own the Popbar store located in NoDa. It was their dream to own a business together, and although it was a bit of a lengthy process they officially opened their doors this past December to a receptive and excited neighborhood.

To my surprise, Popbar is a franchise. I’d been following them on Instagram @PopBar and assumed the extremely popular store was based and originated in the Charlotte area. Not the case, the company was actually established in New York where the first store opened in 2010. So far, there are 13 locations in the U.S. However, the Lyons are intentionally aiming toward creating a mom and pop atmosphere within their store that is welcoming and open to all. I certainly felt the love!

Now, about the pops. To get started, you can choose between 3 different Popbars: popSorbetto, popGelato and yogurtPop. From there, you can go wild and customize your treat with 5 different
chocolate dips and 7 all natural toppings like crushed waffle cone, almonds or even caramel corn. I have to list the chocolates they offer: Dark chocolate, Milk Chocolate, Mint Dark Chocolate, White Chocolate and Carmel Dark Chocolate. From there, you can dip how ever many times you want and add as many toppings as you want. Even better, Popbars have less calories than eating ice-cream, so you can enjoy it, guilt-free!

I really love that whatever you create, you can munch on it conveniently on a stick. No spoon, no mess. Just simple to eat and easy to go. Some other fun facts about Popbar: everything is made in house, there are options for people who are vegan and lactose intolerant, and they even offer hot chocolate on a stick! Kia who has conducted clinical research in Ophthalmology and her husband Clarence, a full-time engineer both love owning and operating their store together. They get to dive into their fun and creative side, as well as enjoy and put smiles on the faces of the people they serve. From my perspective, I can tell they love with they do. As Spring and Summer approaches, be sure to stop by their NoDa location, you’ll be so glad you did.
